The Millennium

Utopia: Paradise on Earth

For thousands of years humans have looked for a utopia on earth. Sadly, one does not exist at this time anywhere on the planet. It did exist in the Garden of Eden but humans gave up the right to that utopia and their right to dwell there.

In Eden, Adam and Eve chose to obey Satan and rebel against God. Satan, in the form of a serpent, told them that if they disobey God and eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil they would become like Him. They used the free will that God had given them and chose to listen to Satan instead of God.1 This first sinful act committed by humans gave the Title Deed of the earth to Satan. The apostle Paul confirmed this when he wrote:

"4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." (2 Corinthians 4:4)

The bad news is that Satan does indeed have reign over the earth at the current time. The good news is that Jesus Christ reclaimed the Title Deed of the earth with His sacrificial death and resurrection. With His crucifixion He defeated the power of Satan and the power of death over humankind. As the writer of Hebrews states:

"14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Jesus now has the authority to redeem the earth from the power of Satan at the time of His choosing. As we read in the Book of Revelation, Jesus will start the reclamation process with the Tribulation Period.

The Purpose of the Millennium

The purpose of the Tribulation Period was to punish the inhabitants of earth for their rebellion against God. It also allowed the Jewish people to accept Jesus as the Messiah. The Millennium has a purpose too.

I believe the primary reason that God is going to rule the earth for a thousand years through His Son Jesus is to show humanity what He wanted for them all along.

In the Garden of Eden God conversed daily with Adam and Eve. He made the earth beautiful and bountiful for His human children to enjoy. God also gave Adam and Eve dominion over the animal kingdom. These animals would not harm them but live in harmony with them. All Adam and Eve had to do was dwell there and fellowship with God. He told them to enjoy the pleasurable experience of procreation and to fill the earth with their children and their children's children. However, God did not want humans to be robots so He gave them a mind and a freedom to exercise their will with it. He hoped that of their own volition they would love Him as their Creator Father. Sadly, they wanted more than what God was offering them.

Adam and Eve wanted to become "Gods" themselves. The result of this was their expulsion from paradise and a life of toil and hardship. God still loved them and made clothes for them from animal skins to protect them. However, their relationship with Him was no longer on the same intimate level that it had been in the Garden. Humans now had to offer sacrifices to fellowship with God. Since that day (with the exception that occurred during Jesus' first coming), mankind can only interact with God on a spiritual level.

The good news is that in the Millennium God will again dwell in the midst of His Creation. As we will see, the animal kingdom will once more live peacefully with humans. Life spans will increase to the lengths of those at the beginning of human history. However, humans will still have free will to act. This time though, God restrains Satan for the duration of the Millennium so he will not be able to exacerbate any sinful human behavior. One other thing that will be different during this time is what will happen to those who think about sinning against others. Jesus will be ruling with a "rod of iron" and will not tolerate any overt rebellion by humans. He will punish them immediately for their sins. Lastly, the fact that there will still be aberrant behavior by some persons means that the Millennial Kingdom of Jesus Christ on earth will not be a perfect utopia. That will only occur in eternity.

Renovation of the Earth

The devastation to the earth that occurs during the Tribulation will make the world uninhabitable for any extended length of time. The judgments of God and very possibly the use of nuclear weapons will burn up large parts of the earth. The catastrophic events that take place will render the majority of the water on the planet undrinkable. God will have to renovate the earth so that humans can dwell on it. He will accomplish this between the judgment of the nations and Jesus' triumphal entry into the Temple in Jerusalem.

17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. 18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy...22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. 23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD. 24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh." (Isaiah 65:17-18; 66:22-24)

God states here that He will create a "new heavens and a new earth". The context of this prophecy clearly relates to the Tribulation Period and the Millennium. He says that humans will look upon the dead bodies of those who transgressed against Him during the Tribulation. He also mentions the moon and the Sabbaths. Since there will be no time references nor a sun or moon in eternity this has to refer to the Millennium (Revelation 21:23) In the Book of Revelation John saw a new heavens and earth at the beginning of eternity (Revelation 21:1). However, this has to be a different creative act because of the context of the various passages. The descriptions used in both of these prophecies led me to conclude that God will indeed recreate the cosmos and earth twice in the future. For the omnipotent Creator of the universe this will be but a simple matter as the prophet Isaiah declares:

"13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? 14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? 15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing." (Isaiah 40:13-15)

I believe this renovation of the earth starts with Jesus' second coming when He sets His foot upon the Mount of Olives. The mount will split in two which creates a new valley (Zechariah 14:1-4). After that and before Jesus enters the new Temple in Jerusalem, the Lord will restore the rest of the earth. He will somehow protect those humans that survive the judgment of the "sheep and goats" while this renovation takes place. Once He is finished the earth will once again be like the Garden of Eden:

"3 For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody." (Isaiah 51:3)

"4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. 5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers...11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations." (Isaiah 61:4-5,11)

The prophet Joel also speaks of the bountiful fruitfulness of this renewed earth:

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim." (Joel 3:18)

Humanity Renovated

In the Millennium, there will be a new relationship between humans and God, each other, and the animal kingdom:

"17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. 18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. 19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. 20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. 21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. 22 They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. 23 They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. 24 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. 25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD." (Isaiah 65:17-25)

God states that He will be in Jerusalem rejoicing in His people. No longer will humans have to wait for an answer from God to their prayers. He declares, "before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear". Jesus will be sitting in the Temple in Jerusalem speaking personally with the inhabitants of the earth.

Humans will reap the benefits of their own labors. Criminals will not be able to infringe upon another person's life. Jesus will rule with a rod of iron as the Psalmist says:

"7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him." (Psalms 2:7-12)

Not only will Jesus not tolerate any criminal behavior, He will stop it before it occurs. Just as He will hear the thoughts of His people before they speak, so too will He know the thoughts of those who wish to do evil. His judgment will fall on them immediately. There will be no lawyers to get their clients off on a technicality for Jesus' judgment will be righteous and true.

In this passage God alludes to the idea that those humans who re-populate the earth during the Millennium will once again live to great ages. A human will be as an infant at one hundred years of age. Some will probably live the full length of the Millennium while others will die because of their sinful attitudes.

Isaiah also said that the dangerous animals would live peacefully together. In another passage, he declares that the animal kingdom will also live peacefully with humans during the Millennium:

"6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den." 6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den." (Isaiah 11:6-8)

Children will be able to play with the animals that previously would have harmed them. The animals will no longer have territorial disputes and will eat grass instead of attacking each other. The world will return to the utopian state that God had originally created for Adam and Eve. There they had lived in harmony with nature and the animals in the Garden of Eden.

There will be no more wars between humans during this time. God declared in an earlier prophecy that He gave to Isaiah:

"2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it...4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Isaiah 2:2,4)

After the false peace treaty that the Antichrist made with the world at the beginning of the Tribulation Period the earth will finally know true peace under the rule of the true Messiah. There will be no more wars until the end of the Millennium when God defeats Satan.

The earth will truly be the paradise that God had originally created it to be. It will be ready for humans to dwell in and multiply.
